Aura (2022) for Six Solo Voices
With text and material drawn exclusively from the ancient Ukrainian lullaby "Oy khodyt’ son kolo vikon" (Ой ходить сон коло вікон), this composition aims to elevate and explore the rich traditional heritage of Ukrainian culture while also expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian people in light of the terrible circumstances they face today. The lullaby's portrayal of a safe future, symbolized by soothing a child to sleep, is rendered tragically impossible through the music's strained messa di voce, rapid glissandos, and fragmentation of the text. The original tune's peaceful reassurance is thus shattered, creating a reflective tension between the omnipresent desire for peace and the apparent impossibility of achieving it.
